You stupid, rookie-mistake-making idiot, what exactly did you expect to happen when you "encouraged" the kids to sleep last night by telling them that they would be getting a present in the morning for Valentines Day? (A holiday you don't even support, I might add. Can't resist buying presents though, can you?) Of course the kids woke you as soon as they saw first light. That's what kids do -- follow the letter of the law. They saw dawn so therefore it was morning and time for presents. At least you got right up and gave them their (unwrapped) presents so you get points for not being a total Scrooge even if there was some delaying stretching and muttering under the breath.
Now that you are awake and they are happy with their new toys and special donuts for breakfast, let's debrief. What could you have done differently? Riiiiiiight, not mention the presents at all. Another option would be to depackage the toys that were apparently fastened into their boxes by NSA experts and set them up in the kids' room while they were sleeping. Then they could have happily played while you stayed in dreamland. Remember that for next year. Oh wait, you'll be up at the crack of dawn each and every day with a baby next year. Mwahahaha! You poor sucker. Nobody to blame but yourself. Sucks, doesn't it?
Sincerely,
Me
