Starbucks is in the middle of the fray. Unlike California Pizza Kitchen which has banned customers from wearing their weapons in the restaurant, Starbucks is allowing it because it is the law that people can do so. It's the reasoning in their statement that gets me. Check out this quote from the article:
The company noted that if it prohibited weapons in its shop, its employees would have to ask law-abiding citizens to leave, placing them in "an unfair and potentially unsafe position." The statement also said the company is "extremely sensitive to the issue of gun violence in our society" but believes "that supporting local laws is the right way for us to ensure a safe environment for both partners and customers."
Soooooo...basically they are afraid that if they deny these gun maniacs the right to wear their weapons while sipping a latte then the maniacs will shoot up the place? Awesome. Yeah, that makes sense. Great logic there.
I applaud Starbucks for not wanting to endanger their minimum-wage-making baristas -- I certainly wouldn't want to tell some idiot to take his weapon and brew his coffee at home -- but their words are so telling about WHY gun owners should not be allowed to carry them in public. Or at all, in many cases.
Here is a quote from the article that made me laugh at the sheer idiocy of it:
Bill Shelbrick, who also took part in the beach cleanup, said many of the open-carry advocates are former police officers and members of the military who believe they can protect themselves and the people around them by carrying weapons.
Umm, yeah riiiiiiiiight. That happens so often. Would you like a nonfat mocha to go with your superhero complex, Mr. Shellbrick?
Good Lord. I hate starting my day with a reminder of how truly fucked-up our nation and some of its people really are.
