After fumbling to define "obvious" without using the word itself in the definition, I cursed my weak brain, whipped out my phone and looked it up in my dictionary app:
obvious (adj) -- easily seen, recognized or understood
I used it in sentences to drive the definition home. "It's obvious that you love your sister because of how you take care of her. It's not obvious that you love sports since you don't want to play soccer this spring."
Then I asked her to use "obvious" in a sentence to be sure she understood.
"It's not obvious that Mommy is fancy because she wears such plain, boring clothes."
*sigh* Yeah. She got it.
Ummm, at least she thinks I'm fancy aside from my questionable wardrobe?
